Greg Palast Arrested Interviewing FEMA Trailer Storm Victims

Reporter Greg Palast was arrested for trying to interveiw FEMA trailer people. The deadline for eviction from the trailer camps is in four months. Nearly no one in these camps have any homes to return to and the public housing that wasn't touched by a drop of water in the floods remain boarded up. Obviously, these people are slated for being eliminated or struggle to survive in the streets of whatever city they can reach.

7/21/06The Federal Emergency Management Agency prohibits journalists from having unsupervised interviews with Hurricane Katrina victims who have been relocated to FEMA trailer parks, according to a report in the Baton Rouge Advocate (7/15/06).

“If a resident invites the media to the trailer, they have to be escorted by a FEMA representative who sits in on the interview,” FEMA spokesperson Rachel Rodi is quoted in the article. “That’s just a policy.”

The Advocate report, by reporter Sandy Davis, describes two separate attempts to talk to people displaced by Katrina that were halted by the intervention of a FEMA security guard. In the first incident, in a Morgan City, Louisiana camp, an interview was interrupted by a guard who claimed that residents of the camp are “not allowed” to talk to the media.

Politicians and public officials expressed outrage that the Bush dictatorship was no allowing hurricane victims to talk with the media except when a FEMA 'escort' was along. When my parents first went to China when Madame Mao was running it, they couldn't leave their rooms without 'escorts'. Since my father speaks Chinese, this meant the escort had to be very vigilant. The victims of last year's storm are American citizens and have the right to talk to reporters within their homes! Their trailers may be owned by the government but the minute the people move in, they are protected by the same laws that protect everyone else.

Of course, in today's America, our Constitutional rights are being interfered with by the stupid Patriot Act.

FEMA is planning to close down these trailer zones and repark the trailers in huge lots in Arkansas.

But the Federal Emergency Management Agency has not forgotten that it has 72,000 travel trailers and mobile homes in Louisiana occupied by evacuees like Oliver.

A year ago, FEMA said the trailers were only temporary shelters and evacuees could live in them for 18 months. Now the agency is preparing for that deadline, which will occur in February.

The officials who are spending half a trillion on a futile war in Iraq and who gave Israel half a billion dollars to relocate a bunch of demented 'settlers' who were living illegally in Gaza but who refused to move unless they got really nice apartment buildings, brand new, these same government officials who are so solicitous about housing Jews in Israel are suddenly braindead when asked about Americans made homeless by a storm! Of course, kicking little children to the curb in the dead of winter is totally irresponsible and utterly heartless.

And this is what America is today: we let in a flood of immigrants while flooding out citizens.

They obviously didn't follow up on this matter and are doing the old mirror trick. Namely, using smoke and mirrors, they pretend reality is what we want it to be but it actually is a prison camp straight out of Nazi Germany. The American form of National Socialism is neither Nationalist nor Social. Traitors of our nation who are antisocial psychopaths. The only thing they picked up from Hitler was how to build super-highways.
