Blunt Force Trauma

"But the 'carbon tax' is a fraud if the goal is to cut pollution. For the people wishing to pollute created this stupid scheme whereby they 'sell' their 'carbon tax' and so, may continue to pollute."

True, that is another way of looking at it. Yet, I was under the impression that there was a 'silver-lining' to the motive; in that those upon whom the tax was imposed, it would change their polluting ways to avoid an extra tax and would switch to low or non polluting methods.

I know. I'm such a Utopian.

Elaine,

What do you make of the Chinese unpegging the Yuan from the dollar and letting it rise? The yen was down sharply against the dollar today. I can't believe the Chinese are just going to give up trying to compete against the Japanese, but I haven't figured out yet what the next act in the drama is going to be.

"When hard helmets were used, the players used them to ram into each other directly."

That's really stupid - you never lead with your helmet. That's what shoulder pads are for. I used to know a guy who led with his helmet. He ended up spending most of his time in a big padded wheelchair, and the rest of it flat on his back.

"A reader sent me this web site. I was totally horrified. The drawings and diagrams look EXACTLY like black holes!"

Oh for pity's sake, Elaine - that looks NOTHING like a black hole. Go take an aspirin and lay down for a while.

"...you never lead with your helmet"

While that is true, it does not undermine Elaine's basic point. Injuries in American football are at least as common, and generally more serious, than in (say) rugby.

I would prefer non-electrical solar panels, windmills, and aquatic wave harvesters to photo voltaic solar panels. Just one small EMP nuke over, say, Oklahoma, would fry all of the solar panels. A massive coronal mass ejection that collides with the earth could possibly have the same effects. And these would be situations in which we would be in dire need of energy!

The harvesting operations are much better developed than storage technologies at the present time. I prefer the utilization of compressed air energy storage. A lot of energy can be stored in a tank of compressed air.

"Injuries in American football are at least as common, and generally more serious, than in (say) rugby."

Depends largely on what level you're playing at - through college, the rules say you wear a lot of equipment: helmet, shoulder pads, knee/thigh pads, etc. etc. In the NFL, the only 2 pieces of required equipment are a helmet and shoulder pads, and most pro players (except for quarterbacks) tend to use only that, and the lightest sets of it they can find at that. Couple that with the size, speed, and strength of NFL players, and yes, guys are going to get hurt. But Elaine was saying that players are moving toward full body armor. The thing is, they aren't - they're taking it off rather than putting it on.

How about non-electric, period? When the Great Catastrophe strikes the only people who won't care are the Amish.

Football concussions are up due to the helmets. And yes, they whack each other with the head. Thus, the damn concussions.

In regard to black holes, one of the anticipated/feared byproducts of the Large Hadron Collider at CERN will be black holes. Start up date is 1 August 2008.

The following is added for amusement only.

TIN FOIL HAT alert.

John Titor described his time machine as being powered by Kerr black holes made by CERN.

There has been an agreement reached.

See this insanely great animation of how it will work !!! —

"Misunderstood Universe" is a very apt title for that site - I can't remember when I've seen such complete douchebaggery.

While you may be a man of considerable class, Smith, you gotta be a hipster to appreciate kitsch.

Hello Elaine,

I remain sanguine about our energy future.

The great Serbo/Croat inventor Nikola Tesla was asked to demonstrate his theories on wireless transmission of electrical power.

So he built a tower in Colorado Springs and harvested the static electrical energy rushing down the east front of the Rocky Mountains. The power was used to light the city.

A town some miles east on the prairie requested similar services, but they were too far from the front of the Rockies to be able to obtain the same results.

Tesla built a tower there and beamed the electrical energy from Colorado Springs to this town; a distance of over 10 miles.

He performed these experiments in 1900!

Therefore, when the current cub scout den of energy thieves have disappeared; I think we will finally develop real energy technologies that are abundant, clean, safe and cheap.

Kindest regards,
PFO
