D. F. Facti

OT, Elaine.

I was trying to find a blog piece you wrote back when about your ancestors who were Yankee temperance advocates - maybe in Kansas? I need to work a little background on the temperance movement into something I'm writing - how it was paired with the call for social justice and protection of women and children.

It was on your old blog, I think.

Sorry, everybody. Hi, all.

Elaine Meinel Supkis

I'll email you, Facti.

"The anxiety to tie chimps to humans is understandable but elevating behavior misses the real point: it wasn't the use of rocks and sticks as 'tools', it was the morbid need to carry a stick or a rock around all the time and use the same one repeatedly and not for one day but day after day. ... The human urge to pick up something and then, if it is put down, remember where it was and to resume picking it up is due to the evolution of our brains: the humanoids that put down rocks or sticks they worked on to make into a weapon would be picked up by a smarter humanoid who would then use it to kill the previous owner."

Doubtful. I posit that finding a good stick or rock and taking it with you for next time is an enormous timesaver: you don't have to be the smartest humanoid ape on the savannah to realize how handy it is to not have to find a workable stick or rock every time you want to bash something.

"This good tree branch. Nice balance. Big sweet spot. I keep!"

Yes, but try REMEMBERING where you put your car keys. Heh. See?

Easy, if you have a place you put 'em every time. (When I'm home, they're in the basket by the front door.)

Apes don't have pockets nor baskets.

Women invented those things...HEH. Saved the men a lot of suffering.

"Apes don't have pockets nor baskets."

But it's pretty easy to remember where I put my favorite club: it's right there where I can grab it!

"Women invented those things...HEH. Saved the men a lot of suffering."

For which I am truly thankful.

Thanks, I'm going to have nightmares tonight.
