Loss of near-focus ability after 40 usually has little to do with macular degeneration. Most often it is because the eye becomes less malleable with age, limiting fine-focus motor control.

Also, your photo shows Dry MD which affects about 15% of the population. The new drugs target Wet MD (i.e. the rest of the affected population) due to the larger potential market size.
