Come 7, come 11! Baby needs new shoes!

"Anyway, the accumulation of star/sun/moon information took off when the ancient people of the world's peskiest place, Iraq, decided to invent writing using a stick and some mud. This way, they could write notations while observing the stars."

Actually, the earliest known proto-writing seems to be... accounting. "Enlik brought 16 sheep to the temple of Marduk." That sort of thing. See:

Yup. I used to have over 50 sheep. You want to count them?

VERY DIFFICULT. First, they love to mill around. Second, they keep their heads down a lot so you can't tell them apart. Third, they like to wander off, too. This is where dogs came in useful.
