I spent a lot of today laughing about this.
I remember the hoorah about redlining that Spitzer led. The threats of incarceration and huge fines for the mortagage banks that practiced that fine art of denying loans to folks they knew could not pay them back. So one part of the stream of idiocy that is the current financial meltdown can be traced back to him.
Stereotypically, we would expect him to be the bottom in this little game of grab and release. Topping from the bottom is more likely the real situation.
One wonders if these exercises were charged on his personal AMEX or his governmental AMEX or if they were cash transactions.
7 diamond service at $5500 an hour is an annualized income of $11 million a year.

Now being a cynic I want to know why Spitzer is only #9 on the list. Who are the superior 8?
During his tenure as a state assistant attorney general, Spitzer loved the use of old statutes to prosecute his victims, now he is getting rougered by an old act originally designed to help enforce local Jim Crow laws. Oh the Humanity of it.
Some days my cup of cynicism needs to be supersized just to get through the pre-dawn hours.
Nailed by wiretaps, emails, and laws that make no sense. Somehow it just fits, like a blivot.

One never uses ones personal credit card unless one is a hopeless bachelor. I am sure Mrs Spitzer would have noticed $5k bill on the credit card. Of course Eliot could have said "I just needed a little me time." or "I met this needy young girl who needed help with her college fees."

For this sort of cost there is normally a paper trail and I would assume that some party that relies on Politicians not getting in the way would have some sort of blind company or business to pick up the tab. The person who may be able to provide more details would a Mr George Fox of Greenwich Connecticut who donated $10K to Mr Spitzer.

This is indeed hilarious. But does anyone remember that Dick Cheney's phone number turned up in the records of the D.C. madam? Of course not. Spitzer was only #9. Johns like Cheney are #1.

They all use whores. I once worked in a strip joint while in college where the politicos went for fun. Ha. It paid for my college, two months per summer. Made oodles of money this way.

Most of us were college girls, by the way.

And this is where I learned about politics and sex.

What can be offered for $5500 an hour?
What grand hidden techniques known only to the initiated and never writtend down are we hoi polloi missing?
What is the content of the "value added" that makes $5500/hr a market clearing price?
What ever could Sptizer ask for that was not "safe"? Did he want it sans protection?
There were no dogwhistles in the ads that would make one think this was an international house of kinks? Even with a double dose of Viagra the best one can hope for is 8 hours of ... these were supposed to be "presentable in society" not going to embarass the buyer in public, escorts.

Meanwhile the French are tres upset that Sarkosky has not yet taken a new mistress.

Something fishy seems to be going on with these political arrests. It seemed to start with Bill Clinton (not that he didn't give us NAFTA, or sell poor people into slavery). And you must check out the Don Siegelman bullmanure:

Lawyer questions whether Spitzer was set up, noting political prosecutions

A prominent New York lawyer who has written for Harper's Magazine about the politically-motivated dismissals of US Attorneys in the Bush Justice Department says he believes there's a strong case that the fall of New York governor Eliot Spitzer was politically motivated.

Harper's Magazine

The Spitzer Sex Sting: A Few More Questions
by Scott Horton
March 10, 2008

...Note that this prosecution was managed with staffers from the Public Integrity Section at the Department of Justice. This section is now at the center of a major scandal concerning politically directed prosecutions. During the Bush Administration, his Justice Department has opened 5.6 cases against Democrats for every one involving a Republican. Beyond this, a number of the cases seem to have been tied closely to election cycles. Indeed, a study of the cases out of Alabama shows clearly that even cases opened against Republicans are in fact only part of a broader pattern of going after Democrats. So here are the rather amazing facts that surface in the Spitzer case:

(1) The prosecutors handling the case came from the Public Integrity Section.

(2) The prosecution is opened under the White-Slave Traffic Act of 1910. You read that correctly. The statute itself is highly disreputable, and most of the high-profile cases brought under it were politically motivated and grossly abusive. Here are a few:

- Heavyweight boxing champion Jack Johnson was the first man prosecuted under the act - for having an affair with Lucille Cameron, whom he later married. The prosecution was manifestly an effort "to get" Johnson, who at the time was the most famous African-American. (All of this is developed well in Ken Burn's film "Unforgiveable Blackness").

- [....]

(3) The resources dedicated to the case in terms of prosecutors and investigators are extraordinary.

(4) How the investigation got started. The Justice Department has yet to give a full account of *why they were looking into Spitzer's payments*, and indeed the suggestion in the ABC account is that it didn't have anything to do with a prostitution ring. The suggestion that this was driven by an IRS inquiry and involved a bank might heighten, rather than allay, concerns of a politically motivated prosecution.

All of these facts are consistent with a process which is not the investigation of a crime, but rather an attempt to target and build a case against an individual.

Revelations Began in Routine Tax Inquiry
March 11, 2008
by William K. Rashbaum

The rendezvous that established Gov. Eliot Spitzer’s involvement with high-priced prostitutes occurred last month in one of Washington’s grandest hotels, but the criminal investigation that discovered the tryst began last year in a nondescript office building opposite a Dunkin’ Donuts on Long Island, according to law enforcement officials.

There, in the Hauppauge offices of the Internal Revenue Service, investigators conducting a routine examination of suspicious financial transactions reported to them by banks found several unusual movements of cash involving the governor of New York, several officials said.

CK: Please reconsider your economic analysis. $11 million annual 'income' @ 5500/hr. comes to 2000 'engagements' and there being 365 days in a year (excluding leap year this year) this amounts to 5.47 'engagements' per day. And if never on Sunday thats even more! Seems to breach reasonable labor laws too.

Jim B

Jail for prostitution, oh, please.....Before all "moralists" arrange that, get me Lady Josephine.....But I can think of more important matters than any of this.

CK

@RB
Being that I am a delicate soul and that the readers here are also quite deliberate and discriminating in their tastes, I thought it would be de classe to start with a Performances/hour metric.
I merely took the standard 40 hour work week/50 week a year = 2000 hour work year and applied the per hour rate to that.
As far as I can gather the ladies were paid per hour not per episodic release. By my reading of the reports, it appeared that neither specific quality or productivity measures mattered in the hourly rate. ( You know I am leading to a pun right?)
This wasn't a piece-work job.

Blunt Force Trauma

Wow. Look at at the comments on this subject!

It seems there are more people much wiser than I that know what 5 grand will get you for an hour.

'Piece-work' indeed.

Hey, blow up dolls on Ebay are going for 11 bucks.

Geez, Spitzer could've saved 4989.

Elaine Meinel Supkis

Spitzer got his dick snagged in the gears of a machine HE helped build. I feel NO PITY for him AT ALL. The desire for naked [HAHAHA] power on the left has caused many a leftist to support this JERK.

He prosecuted others for this 'crime' so he gets to pay the price. He paid the prostitute and now he can pay the grim reaper. He knows he was wrong.

What is evil? Prosecuting people for crimes one wishes to commit. This, in a nut shell, is Spitzer.

Callahan

Hi, Elaine, all.

Spitzer does appear to me to be a loathsome creep. What he has done to his wife and children alone is beneath contempt.

This Spitzer affair does clearly show the power of Wall Street. The Big Boys really hate Spitzer and were afraid of him. Lots of political figures do sordid things, really bad things, as I am sure you all realize. From my own experience I gather that Spitzer is a relatively mild villain compared to many who get a total pass from the mass media.

Spitzer was a bother, and a little bit of a threat, to the Big Boys on Wall Street. Therefore his exposure and destruction. We are seeing real power being exercised.

Elaine Meinel Supkis

He crossed Bruno. And Wall Street who is celebrating today with a freebie from Uncle Santa Claus.

The pirates want to win and the government is owned by the pirates. But Spitzer was a criminal, too. He played for the Jewish Mafia in Brooklyn, a group I know very well, being married into it for a while.

blues

So, he was an asshole. Why should I care? Seriously. I know all about the game. So these people are dumbass? Why should I care? I am so used to this bullshit. You have no concept how used to it I am. I happen to have other concerns.

But if Spitzer quits, this blind black guy gets to be governor. Unlike Spitzer, his "superdelegate" vote goes to Obama, not Clinton. Interesting, huh?

blues

By the way, the Upstate Republican legislators in New York are saying they are ready to impeach Spitzer if he doesn't resign.

I love the smell of impeachment in the morning.

icemann

The quote,'hoist with his own petard' seems appropriate since he has probably used these laws against others.

blues

Of course he has. So what? How naive can you get, fucktard?

icemann

Such a potty mouth, didn't get spanked today?

blues

In fact, it has been noted that Spitzer has prosecuted people for prostitution during his long tenure as head of law enforcement in NY state. Is that any big surprise? I say, get real. These people we grant power to are never to be totally trusted. They seldom can control their egos. Have you not figured out yet that the big game is bullshit? I think they went after this guy because he wasn't a Republican. No other reason.

What he did was wrong, but nowhere, seriously (!), nowhere near killing 1,000,000 people for no reason. Anyone who wants to make such a comparison should go f*ck themselves. Seriously.

CK

@Blues
Some of us, myself, being of lower moral stature are merely enjoying the hilarity. A hubristic public employee receiving a wee bit of public payback and humiliation, a wee bit of exposure of hyporcisy.
Others here have known or interacted with this governor on a closer basis and are enjoying seeing long overdue payback coming to him.
Now according to the latest figures, he has "blown" over 80K on hookers, that is a significant amount of income to spend. Governor pays decently, but his prior jobs weren't all that highly paid. Add to that the cost of raising 3 girls. So nasty minded folks want to know, did the taxpayer pay for his jollies, did the money come from his wife's earnings commingled with his?
Whenever a pol gets screwed, it is time for joy and partying. Do I particularly care that he might have been the target for Bruno, or Bush, or Evil Wall Street Tycoons? Not in the least. He was by definition a parasite, a blight on existence, a non-producer, a self described "steam roller", a criminal. One down so many many more to go.

blues

~Do I particularly care that he might have been the target for Bruno, or Bush, or Evil Wall Street Tycoons? Not in the least.~ — CK

This is a huge problem, and not just from an ethical perspective. Richardson evidently was "loaned" $5 million by his father which turned out to perhaps not be a loan, to one of his campaigns, which would be illegal. The problem is that the federal office that investigated him has been investigating 5.6 Democrats for every Republican. Since about 99% of politicians have some (perhaps merely perceived) corruption, that amounts to taking the election of officials out of the hands of the voters and placing it in the hands of a federal police agency. That is very dangerous. I have been following the (extremely odd) imprisonment of Don Siegelman, former governor of Alabama:

Parts of "60 Minutes" Broadcast Blocked in Alabama
by Larisa Alexandrovna
February 24, 2008

Now, let me tell you what has been going on. As 60 Minutes was putting its show together, the White House put pressure on CBS -- the parent company -- to kill the show. Over the last few days, as word got out that the 60 Minutes show would air tonight, Karl Rove's associates began planting defamatory stories about journalists working on this story (see example here) and attacking the whistle-blower who came forward, Dana Jill Simpson. If you recall, Ms. Simpson testified, under oath, to Congress about Karl Rove's involvement in politicizing the DOJ. What you may not know, however, is that her house mysteriously caught fire and she was run off the road in the weeks leading up to her testimony.

What you may also not know is that Governor Siegelman's house was broken into twice during his trial as was his attorney's office.

Yesterday, the attacks on Simpson and journalists increased with a series of emails from the Alabama GOP. See Here [link].

Tonight was something truly unseen in US history. During the 60 Minutes broadcast and ONLY during the Don Siegelman portion -- the screen went black for Huntsville residents and Mobile residents. There are other reports of other locations, but I have not yet confirmed those. In Florida, a series of strange ads were running about the FISA bill and how Democrats are not tough on terrorism, apparently during the 60 Minutes hour and also right before 60 Minutes, but not after (still trying to confirm when the ads stopped running).

This is where this can end up — Soviet America. After Governor Siegelman's incredibly strange trial, he was sent straight to jail (this was noted to be quite unusual).
